Welcome to Sociedade Nacional de Transporte de Energia, SA (STE)’s website, the company implementing the 400kV Temane-Maputo Power Transmission Line Project.
The Government of Mozambique has a National Energy Strategy based on promoting universal access to electricity and strengthening Mozambique as a major regional hub for electricity generation, as well as diversifying the energy matrix so as to contribute to Mozambique’s industrial and socio-economic development.
One of the main objectives of this strategy is the development of the Backbone Project through the construction of a 400 kV power transmission line to interconnect the Central-North and Southern Mozambique transmission systems, as well as allowing for a higher level of power evacuation through the SAPP (Southern African Power Pool) electricity grid. The Backbone Project consists of the construction of about 1,300 km of 400 kV transmission line from Tete to Maputo, crossing the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Inhambane and Gaza.
The company Electricidade de Moçambique, E.P. created the Sociedade Nacional de Transporte de Energia which was subsequently awarded the concession by the Government to design, build, manage and maintain all the infrastructure of the prospective undertaking, the Espinha Dorsal Project. It is a company 100% owned by EDM, but with its own legal personality, financial, patrimonial and management autonomy.
The Temane-Maputo Transmission Line project constitutes the first phase of the Backbone desideratum. Associated to this, we will have the Temane Thermal Power Plant (in Inhambane) producing 450MW and the Temane-Maputo 400kV Line transporting it to Maputo and, interconnecting the already existing transmission network, allowing access to more energy for the countries of the Southern Region. In a second phase, the Tete-Vilanculos Transmission Line and the Mphanda-Nkuwa Hydroelectric Power Plant will be developed.
The scope of the Temane-Maputo Transmission Line Project (TTP) is the construction of a 400kV line, with a length of about 563 km, between Temane and Maputo and 3 new substations in Vilankulo, Chibuto and Matalane; and the extension of the Maputo substation, which is currently in operation. It should have an economic impact throughout the three provinces – Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo, including 13 districts.
The entry into operation of the Temane-Maputo 400kV Transmission Line will improve security of power supply along its entire length, unlock agricultural potential in rural areas, as well as anchoring industrial and mining activities in the areas crossed, in addition to making a decisive contribution to laying the foundations for universal access to energy by 2030, as part of the Energy for All programme, conceived and developed by the Mozambican government.
Our mission is to “drive the development of Mozambique’s energy potential, creating infrastructures that facilitate universal access and boost industrialisation, facilitating energy transactions in the national and regional markets”, and our guiding vision is to be “a reference of excellence in Southern Africa and internationally in the construction, operation, maintenance and management of medium and large-scale energy transport infrastructures.”
For all these reasons, we feel that our contribution to the process of growth and development of the country, in particular, and of the region and the African continent, in general, is much more than merely transporting electricity. We carry with us progress, industrial, agricultural and economic development, but also human development and the development of society as a whole. Hence our motto: “We transport more than energy!”
This is our official website, a platform through which we will be able to interact directly with our partners, founders and the general public. We are open to receive suggestions, contributions and even observations about the work we do and the area in which we operate: the energy sector! We are aware that the development of the country does not depend exclusively on one institution, but on the participation of all of us. Hence, your contribution is extremely valuable to us!
